UK tech company Spoon Guru secures global grocery deals

A UK-based technology company that helps retailers improve how they list and merchandise special dietary products online has secured an array of new international deals.

Spoon Guru, which already works with Tesco in the UK and Walmart-owned Jet.com in the US, is now providing technology to support the online operations of Albert Heijn in the Netherlands and Woolworths in Australia and New Zealand.

These grocers are integrating Spoon Guru's proprietary technology into their digital shopping platforms, which the supplier said enables customers with special dietary requirements to shop more safely.

Tesco has been using the search and filter technology on its web pages since 2017. Spoon Guru gives companies an automated way of returning online search results based on customer preferences, be it intolerance to lactose or nuts, or specific dietary requirements like vegetarian, vegan, low fat, or low salt.

Markus Stripf, co-founder and co-CEO of Spoon Guru, remarked: “Spoon Guru is passionate about helping food consumers across the globe and our expansion into new international territories makes this possible.

“The technology provides an innovative solution to a worldwide pain-point; 64% of the world’s population is on some form of exclusion diet and whether this is due to allergy, intolerance or health and lifestyle choices, the demand for a more personalised approach to food shopping is clear.”

Spoon Guru adds dietary tags to its retail partners' product catalogues, saying it combines “a sophisticated combination of artificial intelligence, algorithms and human expertise to make products more accessible, searchable and discoverable”.

The company began life as an app, which is still available to download in the UK and US, but it has now developed into business to business solution that can be embedded into third-party websites.

Stripf added: “Jet, Albert Heijn and Woolworths are all forward-thinking brands that share the same passions as Spoon Guru, making them the perfect partners for our business as we grow into a global solution."
