TK Maxx to open Queensgate store

TK Maxx is to open a new store at Queensgate Shopping Centre in Peterborough, with work on the unit set to begin in March this year.

The store will be a large one, measuring 3,484 sq m (37,500 sq ft). It will feature TK Maxx's 'no-walls' interior format, which allows departments to be scaled up or down to reflect new trends, collections, and seasonal promotions. Design is understood to be by an in-house team.

TK Maxx first launched in the UK in 1994, as a subsidiary of US group TJX Companies. It used a different name to the TJ Maxx stores in the US, to avoid any confusion with TJ Hughes in the UK. It began expanding into mainland Europe in 2007, and now has more than 500 European stores. It sells a broad range of fashion and home ranges.

Several high-profile brands opened stores in Queensgate Shopping Centre last year, including Skechers, Swarovski, Deichmann and Disney. Between them they occupied 1,505 sq m (16,196 sq ft) of space. The centre also welcomed independent local gastropub, Tap & Tandoor.

“This is an extremely exciting period for Queensgate, during which a significant investment is being made in the Centre. Having new retailers signing up to join us is testament to our aim of successfully positioning Queensgate as the dominant retail space in its catchment area,” said Guy Thomas, head of retail at parent company Lendlease. “Our goal is to provide an unrivalled retail and leisure line-up, which provides visitors with an improved experience in preparation for the wider extension plans for Queensgate.”
