Tesco plans Clubcard revamp similar to Amazon Prime

Tesco is thought to be planning an overhaul of its Clubcard loyalty scheme, which could see it unveil a programme similar to Amazon Prime.

The Times reported over the weekend that the revamp of Clubcard would encourage shoppers to sign up to the retailer’s bank and mobile phone services.

The new scheme is thought to be linked with the Tesco Pay+ app, which currently allows shoppers to use a smartphone app to pay for their shopping with a simple scan of a barcode in store. The app is connected to the customer’s debit or credit card information as well as their Clubcard, allowing them to collect points without presenting their physical loyalty card.

The Tesco Pay+ app was created to simplify payment and loyalty for in-store shoppers. Meanwhile, Amazon Prime has redefined loyalty in recent years, seeing customers pay a membership fee of £79 per years to access services including unlimited next-day delivery and its music and video streaming service. More and more retailers are looking to expand their business propositions to include services and experiences in an increasingly difficult economic climate.
