Starbucks and Chase launch Rewards integrated prepaid card

Starbucks has made it easier for customers to earn points in its loyalty programme.

The coffee giant has teamed with US financial institution Chase to launch the Starbucks Rewards Visa Prepaid Card, the first general purpose prepaid or debit card for which consumers can earn ‘Stars’ for purchases outside of its stores.

The card is integrated directly into the retailer’s Rewards programme. Users will automatically receive Gold Status, earn ‘Stars’ with spend and become eligible for the likes of birthday rewards and free food and beverage items.

This is the second co-branded product introduced by the companies this year, following the Starbucks Rewards Visa Card. Chase Merchant Services is the payment processing partner for Starbucks stores in the US and Canada, and mobile payments service Chase Pay is accepted at participating stores in the US, as well as via its app.

“As we continue to expand and strengthen our digital relationships with customers, we want to make sure we’re providing choices that are both rewarding and meet their preferences in how they engage with us,” said Matt Ryan, chief marketing officer, Starbucks. “This reloadable Visa Prepaid card is a unique and modern option that gives customers one more way to earn more Stars and Rewards through everyday spend, in a way they haven’t been able to before.”

During Starbucks’ 13-week fiscal second quarter ended 1stApril, the Rewards programme added 1.6 million active members in the US, up 12% over the prior year. And member spend increased to 39% of US company-operated sales.
