Sainsbury's unveils first of several 'On the Go' stores

A range of digital services are on offer at Sainsbury’s new ‘On the Go’ store format, which has opened in London’s Mansion House as a way of providing additional convenience to shoppers in the City.

Sainsbury's customers can shop till-free using the SmartShop mobile app, or visit the dedicated rapid exit checkouts if they would prefer to use a till, while Argos and Tu clothing click & collect is also available in the new 2,200 sq ft space. 

Set up to cater for busy workers, the store combines freshly made and prepared in-store food and drink, with the aforementioned convenient ways to shop. Customers have the option to eat-in thanks to the perch tables at the front of store – a new feature for Sainsbury’s – or ‘grab and go’ items from the rotated breakfast, lunch, and afternoon tea ranges.

There is an element of self service, too, in the form of a coffee machine and orange juicer.

Sainsbury’s said almost 90% of the products available in the store have been picked specifically to meet the needs of Mansion House customers, using data and analytics processes to select the most appropriate ranges.

According to grocery research and training body, IGD, the UK food to go market is forecast to be worth £23.4 billion by 2024, up from £18.5 billion in 2019, which is a key factor in Sainsbury’s decision to offer this new store format. Nine more – in Edinburgh, Bristol, Glasgow, and London – are set to open over the coming months, but Sainsbury’s noted that it operates 130 Local stores in busy urban areas that could be converted into On the Go stores in time.
