Sainsbury's launches Deliveroo pizza delivery partnership

UK grocer Sainsbury’s has announced a new tie-up with food delivery company Deliveroo.

From today (22 July), the supermarket chain’s Cambridge, Selly Oak, West Hove, Pimlico and Hornsey stores will begin a trial of delivering pizzas fresh from their in-store kitchens to customer who have ordered via Deliveroo.

Sainsbury’s says it is the first time a UK supermarket has offered hot takeaways through Deliveroo, but it follows Asda expanding its partnership with Just Eat which involves the grocer’s kitchen-made food being made available on the marketplace.

The Co-op has also been trialling selling alcoholic drinks and confectionery via Deliveroo since 2018.

As well as hot pizzas, Sainsbury's customers on Deliveroo will have the opportunity to purchase sweet and savoury snacks, and sides, salads, dips, and drinks.

Sainsbury’s said the move is part of its drive to “develop and implement digital technologies to improve customer experience and make sure they can shop quickly and conveniently whenever, wherever and however they want”. The collaboration with Deliveroo, of course, means it can lean on the tech expertise of a company that is already established in the local online food delivery space.

Deliveroo already operates in more than 200 towns and cities across the UK.

Clodagh Moriarty, Sainsbury’s group chief digital officer, commented: “With more and more shoppers looking for convenient and affordable meals delivered to their doors, our trial with Deliveroo brings our great value hot food direct to customers’ homes.

“We’re committed to making it as quick and easy as possible for our customers to shop with us and we’ll be listening to their feedback throughout the trial to understand how we can best serve their hot food delivery needs. We’re excited to see what our customers think before deciding if, how and where we go next with the offer.”

Customers can choose from nearly 50 Sainsbury’s products on Deliveroo, including its sourdough pizzas. The grocer said additional colleagues will help man the in-store counters, which will open later to fulfil customer demand for late night food and dinners.
