German online grocer Getnow upgrades payments options

German online grocer and Metro partner, Getnow, has embedded additional flexibility to its payments platform thanks to a link-up with Wirecard.

The collaboration means Getnow customers have a larger array of digital payment options, which are all processed by Wirecard.

It said in a statement today (8 July) that once customers order groceries at its site, Getnow employees then purchase the goods from Metro, the largest wholesaler in Germany, before carrying out same-day deliveries.

IGD, the UK-based research and training charity for the grocery industry, ranks Germany as the world’s seventh biggest online grocery market.

It says the sector was worth $266 billion in 2018, but estimates it will grow by 15.2% to $341.1 billion over the next five years. This would represent a compound annual growth rate of 2.9%, which is expected to be higher than the UK (2.8%) and France (2.2%), and level with the US.

Sebastian Wiese, CTO at Getnow, commented: “With our platform, we offer a new shopping experience that attracts an increasing number of customers.

“Ultimately, online grocery shopping is much easier and less tedious than in a traditional supermarket: from the selection of products to the checkout. We know the major role payment plays when it comes to online shopping, and with Wirecard we have found a partner who understands our vision and helps us offer a fully digital and uncomplicated shopping experience."
