New retail hub planned for Changchun tower development

Construction has started on a new tower complex, anchored by a 170,000 sq m (1.8m sq ft) retail and entertainment complex, in Changchun, China. It is scheduled to open in 2021.

Changchun CR Center has been created by developer China Resources Land, with design by architecture groups Goettsch Partners (GP) and Lead8. It marks the third collaboration between the three groups. On this occasion GP is designing the main 300m tower, and Lead8 is designing the retail and entertainment offer.

The building is part of a 34,000 sq m (eight acre) development that will eventually include multiple towers with office space, residential units and fully-furnished serviced apartments. Signature spaces will include a 66th floor observation deck overlooking the adjacent Mudan Yuan park.

“The design team seeks to create a development in close harmony with the surrounding environment,” says Goettsch Partners design partner Paul De Santis. “The project will be an identifiable cultural icon and memorable destination for visitors from across the city, region and world.”

The MixC RDE Center will be a new concept for China’s MixC brand, which operates retail and entertainment venues. It will seek to elevate the traditional shopping centre while reflecting Changchun’s culture, with features including an integrated retail street housing luxury brand stores, pop-up exhibitions and fine dining restaurants. A glass façade will make the centre feel connected to the street outside.

“The new Changchun MixC is purposefully designed to blur the lines that define indoor and outdoor spaces,” says Claude Touikan, co-founder and executive director of Lead8. “It not only creates a new dimension to China Resources Land’s MixC brand, it expands on the concept of urban retail design.”
