N Brown names Tesco's Matt Davies as new chairman

Tesco UK & Ireland CEO Matt Davies has been named the new chairman of online fashion group N Brown.

Davies will assume the role and take a non-executive position on the board on 1 May, succeeding Andrew Higginson, who is moving on after five years in the hotseat.

It was announced two weeks ago that Davies would be stepping down from his position at Tesco to make way for Booker’s Charles Wilson, who is set to become UK & Ireland chief at the point Tesco merges with the wholesaler.

Viewed as a good motivator of people and credited with helping turn Tesco around following a turbulent period for the UK's largest retailer, the new N Brown chairman’s previous retail jobs include CEO of Halfords from 2012 to 2015 and CEO of Pets at Home (2004 - 2012). Prior to that he was finance director of Halfords (2001 - 2004).

Today’s news represents one of a number of major executive appointments in retail during the first few weeks of 2018, with Dixons Carphone, New Look, and Shop Direct among the companies experiencing change at the top.

Higginson, who is also chairman of Morrisons, said of Davies’ arrival: "Matt is a first-class retailer and brings a wealth of experience to the group.

“He has a proven track record of value creation across retail and online through his roles as CEO of Tesco UK and ROI and as CEO of Halfords and Pets at Home. It has been a privilege to chair the company through the past five years, and I wish the business every success in the coming years."

Senior independent director of N Brown, Ron McMillan, led the selection process, and also commended Davies’ multichannel retail skills.

"Having conducted a thorough process it was clear that Matt was the best fit to be our next chair,” he explained.

“He has huge experience of retail and online businesses and will be a strong addition to the N Brown board, bringing knowledge, leadership and customer focus. On behalf of the board, I would like to thank Andy for his considerable help and guidance over the past five years and wish him well going forward."
