Ikea names new UK & Ireland country retail manager

Furniture and homewares retailer Ikea has a new country manager for the UK & Ireland.

Peter Jelkeby has joined from Swedish retailer Clas Ohlson, where he worked for the past nine years, most recently as acting CEO, taking over from Javier Quiñones. The departing UK & Ireland boss has taken over the running of Ikea’s US retail business.

Jelkeby has been tasked with leading the on-going transformation of the Ikea business, at a challenging time for the retail industry, which includes the continued roll-out of new smaller and localised store formats and the further development of its online retailing and digitally-influenced operations.

The new UK & Ireland leader had previously spent 20 years at Ikea in Sweden, Russia, Vietnam and the UK & Ireland, starting as a part-time co-worker in his local store before joining Ikea Trading AG and taking on numerous roles with the retailer. He is the former store manager of Ikea Lakeside, and the ex-sales & communications manager and deputy retail manager of the UK & Ireland division.

As Clas Ohlson he held the roles of executive vice president/chief operating officer and director of operations before assuming the acting CEO job.

“I’m delighted to return to Ikea UK & Ireland at such a significant point in our history, as we evolve and renew our business to ensure Ikea’s continued success,” Jelkeby explained.

“Building on many years of solid growth, we are responding to the changing needs of our customers to secure an Ikea that is affordable, reaches more people, delivers excellent customer experience and is truly people and planet positive.”

Earlier this year Ikea opened a Greenwich, London store that it has called its most sustainable store, as well as a second urban London location – the Ikea Planning Studio in Bromley.
