Iceland Foods names Innovation Lab start-ups

Frozen foods retailer Iceland has named the eight technology start-ups that will join its accelerator programme, which is run in association with innovation specialist L Marks.

Over the next nine weeks, the businesses – many of which aim to bridge the gap between online and physical shopping – will work with Iceland and L Marks to develop their concepts, use the retailer’s resources, and access a range of expert advice.

Solutions they are working on fall into the categories of providing a seamless customer experience across channels, improving supply chain optimisation and in-store processes, and enhancing sustainability.

The list of companies includes delivery tools Exaactly and Locpin, and in-store solution providers Intelligent Replenishment and Wiseshelf.

GreenJinn, meanwhile, is a mobile solution that allows users to redeem coupons. The app collects all the information about a customer’s entire shopping basket, and personalises future offers thanks to machine learning capabilities.

Iceland is building a reputation for its war on plastic and attempts to improve its carbon footprint, including testing its own reverse vending system in some stores for plastic bottles. Two of the start-ups joining its Innovation Lab have environmental good practice at their core.

One of those, Valentis, offers technology that combines nanoparticles with cellulose nanocrystals, a biodegradable, transparent material made from plant biomass, to produce highly improved polymeric coatings and compounds.

Meanwhile, another of the eight companies, Wasteless, is a dynamic pricing solution that aims to help retailers reduce waste. The eighth start-up is called How Do I?.

Tarsem Dhaliwal, Iceland Foods’ COO, said: "We’re looking forward to working with some of the best and brightest talent from the start-up world, developing solutions that will benefit Iceland and our customers.”

Daniel Saunders, L Marks CEO, added: “Iceland Foods has a history and reputation for being a fast paced and innovative organisation and I’m delighted they have chosen to partner with L Marks for the delivery of the Innovation Lab.”
