House of Fraser supply chain initiative to push Chinese products in UK

House of Fraser's majority owner Sanpower Group has announced a new supply chain programme designed to create a pathway for premium Chinese brands to access the UK, Europe and rest of the world through the department store chain.

Announced at the inaugural Sanpower Global Supplier Conference in Nanjing, China, the new global supply chain platform supports the Chinese government’s ‘Belt and Road’ vision, which aims to boost trade and stimulate economic growth across Asia and beyond.

As part of the move, the new Sanpower Supply Chain and Branding Management Centre will undertake and manage House of Fraser’s trade orders, with a target of increasing the depth of in-house products and shortening product development cycle and delivery.

With House of Fraser one of a host of UK retailers reporting sluggish trading in recent months, a new international range of products made available to customers could be used to inject a point of difference to its merchandising proposition. It may also be leveraged to raise the department store chain’s profile among tourists and Asian residents in the UK.

Kong Jun, Sanpower’s new commerce industry group CEO, said: “This is a great platform for premium Chinese products to reach the UK and further afield across Europe.

“Chinese manufacturing has transformed in recent years from extensive processing and production into a new era marked by independent designs, proprietary brands and innovation. We are excited to use our tremendous network of resources and cross-border retail expertise to bring the best of Chinese retail to the UK market in a way that brings great value to customers and brands alike.”

Simon Pickering, House of Fraser’s UK global product sourcing director, added that the traditional image associated with items made in China is changing.

“Increasing numbers of high-quality Chinese products are becoming popular with British and European consumers,” he explained.

“Once these products enter House of Fraser’s sales channel, they will be able to access Europe and the greater global market, given quality and credit endorsement from House of Fraser. Furthermore, consolidating our global supply network through made-in-China products and Chinese brands will support House of Fraser in further boosting sales and competitiveness.”

RBTE takes place at London’s Olympia, 2-3 May 2018.
