Asos visual search tool gets global roll-out

Online fashion house Asos has made its in-app visual search functionality available to Android mobile operating system users, meaning its global customer base now has access to the retail technology.

The fast-growing online clothing business launched its Style Match service for iOS in August 2017, but rolled out the platform for use on additional devices on Friday.

The app-based technology means customers can now take a photo of a piece of clothing to generate a search, with the tool able to serve up like-for-like products and similar-looking ranges. The aim of the service is to appeal to shoppers looking for instant gratification – with those using it able to generate search results by taking a picture of a physical product they see being worn in the street, an image from a magazine, or screen shot of a digital image.

Asos’s final results for 2016-17 showed the company generated retail sales of £1.87 billion in the 12 months to 31 August, during a year in which it ramped up the pace of both technology investment and implementation, including a company-wide re-platforming and the addition of new specialised job roles to meet demand for innovation.

The year saw 120 engineers and technologists recruited, and the company said it plans to add around 200 more of these roles during this financial year.

And after positive Christmas trading, which saw the retailer generate sales of £790.4 million in the four months to 31 December 2017, which represented a rise of 30% year on year, CEO Nick Beighton talked up the company’s recent tech-driven initiatives, saying they helped drive sales and increase customer numbers.

“Velocity in our technology programmes continued, with a record number of releases,” he stated.

“Our customer proposition was further enhanced in the UK with the launch of Try Before You Buy and Asos Instant, our same-day delivery proposition.”
