Superdrug parent AS Watson opens tech-heavy Hong Kong concept store

Superdrug parent company AS Watson Group (ASW) has opened its new concept store CKC18 in Hong Kong, with multiple technology features integrated into the space.

Located at Cheung Kong Center, the store includes multiple mobile payment options and scan & go facilities as it looks to offer a quick and convenient way of shopping.

The new space brings together ASW’s various formats, and is divided into four sections: the international food emporium ‘food le parc’, health & beauty outlet ‘WatsonsLab’, innovative tech zone ‘TechLife by Fortress’, and wine area ‘Bar 0001 by Watson’s Wine’.

Victor Li, chairman & group co-managing director of ASW parent CK Hutchison Holdings, and Dominic Lai, group managing director of ASW were present at the grand opening late last week.

“With the determination to accelerate digital transformation, ASW is glad to introduce the latest retail technologies to optimise shopping experience in a convenient and innovative approach,” explained Lai.

“CKC18 applies technologies intensively. Besides the use of AlipayHK and other mobile payments, unmanned checkout counters are also available at WatsonsLab. Customers can simply checkout by placing their shopping baskets on checkout counters that automatically scan and tally up the total, while electronic payments are supported.”

The store also links up with a ‘TasteToGo’ function in ASW’s MoneyBack app, enabling consumers to reserve their meals in advance at the store’s food le parc, with the aim of reducing their waiting time during busy periods.

CKC18’s scan & go function also links with the app, meaning food le parc customers can select their products, scan the barcodes with their phones and pay at self-checkout counters.

At the in-store WatsonsLab, meanwhile, there is a ‘Style me’ tablet equipped with augmented reality technology which allows shoppers to see how they would look using the various beauty and make-up products.

Lai added: “As one of the landmarks in Hong Kong, Cheung Kong Center is located at the heart of the business district in Central with top notch financial institutions.

“The grand opening of CKC18 indicates that Cheung Kong Center will soon become a hotspot for dining, shopping, entertaining and self-pampering.”

He also said ASW wants to open one store every seven hours, and the group has plans to unveil 1,300 new stores worldwide this year – including continued expansion in Hong Kong.
