Amsterdam airport trials Deliveroo delivery to gate service

Deliveroo will be delivering food orders to airline gates at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol through to the end of March, as part of a new service being trialled by the Dutch hub.

The service, which is being run in conjunction with airport food & beverage (F&B) operator HMS Host International, will be available every day between 07:00 and 20:30. Passengers flying from the airport’s Pier E can order via Deliveroo’s app or website and receive their items within 15 minutes, in what has been described as an airport retail first.

The meals are prepared at multiple airport locations, including Kebaya, The Market, The Grill and The Oven. Orders are delivered by scooter to the gate or the Mercure Hotel – which is also located after passport control – for a delivery charge of €2.50.

An evaluation process will take place at the end of March, but if the pilot is deemed to have been successful it will be extended to the airport’s Pier D.

Tanja Dik, director of consumer products & services at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, said there are practical reasons behind the launch of the service, as well as it being an innovative concept.

“The fact is that space for additional retail and catering outlets in the terminal and the piers is limited,” explained Dik.

“That’s why we come up with innovative concepts like this and keep a close eye on trends in technological and digital developments. If we see opportunities, we’ll then implement them in the hope that we can improve the passenger experience even further.”

Mathieu de Lophem, general manager for Deliveroo Benelux, said the company wanted to provide “the best food delivery experience in the world”, adding that this mission need not be limited to the home or office.

“With delivery to the gate now available at Schiphol airport from a selection of HMS Host International restaurants, passengers no longer need to miss breakfast, lunch or dinner even when they may only have minutes to spare before boarding."
