Amazon closes local Chinese operations

Amazon announced that it will be closing its Chinese marketplace, where domestic customers purchase products from third-party Chinese merchants.

In a market dominated by local players JD.com and Alibaba, Amazon has decided to close the Chinese marketplace function on its Amazon.cn website on July 18, allowing the eCommerce giant to focus on international sales.

A statement read: “Over the past few years, we have been evolving our China online retail business to increasingly emphasise cross-border sales, and in return we’ve seen very strong response from Chinese customers.”

Chinese consumers will still be able to use the marketplace to purchase products from international sellers including from the US, Japan and the UK.
