Camelot powers National Lottery with Hughes Europe

Camelot has renewed its contract with Hughes Europe to power the National Lottery until 2023.

The vendor will continue to provide connectivity for the National Lottery’s 36,000 sites across the UK for a further four years. The contract initially began ten years ago and was due to end in 2019.

Hughes Europe’s technology is a satellite-based, end-to-end managed VPN solution, which it claims has helped the National Lottery increase sales by over 40% in the last decade.

A National Lottery transaction takes around 1.2 seconds, which includes the time it takes to travel through the Hughes satellite network to the Camelot host system and back to the retailer.

The technology also enables POS digital screens to provide information such as jackpots and rollover news, which encourages customers to buy tickets.

Camelot CIO, Neil Kellar, said the decision to renew the Hughes contract was “straightforward” because of the support it provides in helping the National Lottery deliver £30 million to charities every week.

“Without the in-depth expertise and can-do attitude that Hughes so enthusiastically brings to the table, this simply would not be possible,” he said. “We have no doubt that Hughes will continue to meet Camelot’s growing demands for resilience and innovation with a fantastic quality of service as we look to implement new technologies that will help us to raise even more money for good causes for years to come.”

Chris Britton, MD of Hughes Network Systems Europe, added: “This partnership has generated an unbelievable amount of funding for good causes while supporting exciting gaming initiatives in the UK. We’re immensely proud of the work we’ve achieved with Camelot and we look forward to future projects, applying new technologies to benefit Camelot’s life-changing mission throughout this extended partnership.”
