Budgens trials new scan-as-you-go mobile shopping app

UK supermarket Budgens is deploying a new mobile app that gives consumers an opportunity to scan their shopping as they go around the store, enabling them to check out with the tap of a smartphone at the point of sale (PoS).

Prior to a national roll-out, the app is available for use at the Warner's Budgens franchise store in Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire. Users input their shopping list into the app and when they enter the supermarket the list is rearranged to reflect the layout of the store.

Shoppers scan barcodes using the app – including variable barcodes on weighted products – which helps keep track of spend, before one tap of a smartphone on a payment point at the end of the in-store journey negates the need to unload items on to a conveyor belt for re-scanning.

The Ubermarket app was founded by entrepreneur Will Broome, who has developed the concept with £325,000 in private equity finance. It was built by mobile solutions provider DMI, and phase two of its development will see users able to pay in the app, without the need to scan at the checkout.

In the future, the app will enable shoppers to locate an entire shop according to dietary or allergy requirements. At present, the app is only available on iOS devices but it will soon be accessible on Android operating platform.

The patent-pending Ubamarket is due for national roll-out over the next 12 months, in a range of stores where payment and loyalty solutions supplier HTEC has its PoS equipment. HTEC is part of Universe Group, which lists clients including Budgens, Nisa and Spar.

Guy Warner, managing director of Warner's Budgens Supermarkets, said: "I feel that this revolutionary new app will effectively bridge the gap between online convenience and the in-store experience that Warner's Budgens shoppers enjoy.

"I am keen to roll this out to our other stores as quickly as possible, especially as our PoS, operated by HTEC, is now fully compatible with the app."
