Blackwell's deploys interactive digital signage at new university stores

Blackwell's has opened two new stores in Cardiff and Liverpool which are part of a trial looking at the concept of the modern academic bookshop.

The two new stores on the Cardiff and Liverpool university campuses feature a modernised design, with digital displays and interactive touchscreens.

The new format also collaborates physical and eBooks, with the latter accessible on the Blackwell’s Learning Platform through interactive in-store screens or available to purchase at the till. This bespoke academic eReading platform allows students to choose how they wish to study across laptops, tablets and smartphones, supported by free Apple and Android apps. Students can bookmark, annotate and share notes using the platform.

Blackwell’s CEO, David Prescott, said: "When students come in for textbooks we want to show them an environment that will inspire them to come back and see us throughout the year.

"These new format shops will provide a new experience with more space for students to sit down and take advice from our expert booksellers, to browse multiple channels on interactive touchscreens that not only gives them access to the stock in shop but also to the eight million titles we have online for home delivery or collection on campus."

At Cardiff University, the store will re-open in the Student Union building following a redevelopment of the shopping zone, while the store in Liverpool has partnered with Caffe Nero to integrate books with coffee and create a social space for local students.

The trial bookshops will also offer flexible delivery options for its catalogue of over eight million titles.
