House of Fraser poaches M&S digital director

David Walmsley is to join House of Fraser as its chief customer officer, replacing Andy Harding who quit the role last month.

At House of Fraser he will be responsible for the retailer's customer-centric approach to retail and developing a truly omnichannel strategy across the business. He will report to CEO, Nigel Oddy when he joins the business. His start date is yet to be disclosed.

Walmsley is currently the director of M&S digital, with responsibility for its global digital business unit, covering all aspects of its digital transformation. Over his four years at M&S he drove growth across digital channels and managed a team of 700 people across the UK and India, who worked across digital development, engineering, product management, user experience and design, digital marketing, supply chain, contact centres, instore, international, analytics and site merchandising.

He reported into executive director of mulichannel, Laura Wade Gery, and has absorbed some of the responsibilities while she has been on maternity leave this year.

He also led the programme to replatform M&S.com in-house from Amazon infrastructure, which went live in February 2014 with a number of teething problems.

Before joining M&S in 2011, he was director of eCommerce at Dixons and prior to that he was head of web selling and customer services as John Lewis, launching John Lewis Fashion online and developing click & collect.
