Design showcase: Candy Cloud at Dublin Airport

Children and adults alike are being tempted to treat themselves and one another in a new confectionery store at Dublin Airport Terminal 1’s new shopping zone, The Loop.

The Candy Cloud is the first standalone confectionery concept aimed at both adult and child markets to be opened by travel retail company ARI. The colourful 90 sq m store boasts more than 180 product lines and focuses on the gifting and self-treating opportunities of airport travel.

The highly experiential concept has been designed by The Design Solution, a London-based design and architecture agency that specialises in airport retail projects.

Midfloor cloud-shaped gondolas feature candy cane legs and lollypop signage, while a ceiling installation evokes clouds of meringues. The floor features stylised images of swirling candyfloss. The central area of the store features a replica hot air balloon basket.

The area is brought to life for the customers by a combination of scent and a parabolic sound system, encouraging a longer dwell time and a greater level of exploration.

ARI undertook extensive research, engaging with children at a local school and hosting a design competition. Winning entries have informed the look and feel of the store and the choice of the merchandise. Features include a kids-only zone, complete with an enchanted forest filled with giant lollipops and marshmallows.

A mix of branded wall bays, category-led promotions and grab-and-go offers is used to drive sales.
