'Social Wi-Fi' launched in Schuh stores

Shoe retailer Schuh has launched a guest Wi-Fi system that its customers can access via social login or a short form, enabling the business to offer shoppers a quick internet connection when they arrive in-store.

The service gives the retailer an opportunity to easily edit login pages and URL redirects, as well as identify which devices customers are using and other analytics that can help the organisation learn more about how their customers are engaging with the brand.

Schuh will also use the Wi-Fi to automatically direct customers to its 'Find My Size' page, which allows shoppers to check stock in real time on their phones. After logging in, the customer enters a code from the product they are interested in and the stock checker will tell them what sizes and colours are available.

Working with software firm Purple WiFi, the new Wi-Fi service has already been installed in two-thirds of the Schuh estate. The retailer operates over 100 stores and plans are in place to roll out the solution to the remaining outlets by the second quarter of this year.

The Schuh partnership with Purple WiFi also gives the business the opportunity for more social media exposure, with customers who use it directed to social tools such as Skype and FaceTime so they can show their friends potential purchases.

Purple WiFi worked alongside Egton and Cisco Meraki to deliver the Wi-Fi for Schuh, following an initial introduction from Ingram Micro.

Chrid Johnston, customer insight manager at Schuh, remarked: "We're delighted that Purple WiFi can be customised so that visitors to our stores are getting a real Schuh experience when they access our free Wi-Fi.

"The potential insight that the analytics will give us and how it can be used to make visiting our stores even more enjoyable for our customers is really exciting."

Schuh also said it is using a completely separate and secure channel to the customer Wi-Fi for its mobile payment service. Still working alongside Purple WiFi, the retailer's m-payments solution incorporates handheld payment devices, transactional kiosks and e-receipts to add to the choices its customers have in-store.
