Zapp to appear at RBTE as mobile payment momentum grows

The way retailers accept payments is continually evolving and there are a number of new transaction options expected to filter onto the high street over the coming months.

Independent payments consultant Mark McMurtrie, from Payments Consultancy, told Essential Retail recently that he expects wide-scale adoption by large retailers of tablet-based mobile payment solutions for in-store assisted selling and queue busting.

He is also confident that mobile payments providers Zapp and Pingit will have a major impact in the retail market in 2015, allowing consumers to make purchases simply by using their existing bank apps and mobile devices.

In October last year Zapp annnounced that Asda, House of Fraser, Sainsbury's and Shop Direct had agreed to introduce its technology into their respective businesses. Clarks, Dune, Spar and Thomas Cook are also teaming up with Zapp, which counts UK payment providers Verifone, Klarna, Touch Go, Siemens, Apogee International, Vix Technologies, Global Charge, Just Desire and RSL as partners.

With Zapp gathering momentum in the retail space, the company has signed up for this year's RBTE, the fastest growing retail technology and solutions show in Europe, which will run from 10-11 March at London's Olympia.

Peter Keenan, CEO of Zapp, said that he is "very excited" about appearing at the event alongside more than 350 other exhibitors from all different parts of the retail technology ecosystem.

"It's a time of enormous transformation for the retail industry, driven by changing shopping habits and the possibilities opened up by new technologies such as mobile payments," Keenan explained.

"And we're confident 2015 will be a watershed year, when mobile payments go mainstream, driven by the consumer launch of simple, secure solutions like Zapp. We're removing the pain of payment for millions of British consumers, letting them complete purchases quickly and securely, using just their existing bank app and their mobile device. This helps retailers massively enhance customer experiences, as well as cut fraud."

Referencing its partnerships with financial providers and some of the largest retailers in the UK, Keenan predicts that 35 million consumers will be able to use Zapp to pay for goods and services when the business officially launches its service later this year.

"As we gear up to launch, we’re very excited to be showcasing the power of Zapp at this year's RBTE," he said.

"Zapp is a payment method that is open to all and so we're looking forward to catching up with our existing partners as well as starting new conversations with retailers who want to offer Zapp to their customers."

Zapp will be exhibiting at RBTE 2015, on stand 466.
