John Lewis Partnership unveils new gift card programme

A new gift card programme has arrived at the John Lewis Partnership, with the retail group replacing paper gift vouchers with plastic cards at John Lewis and Waitrose.

The cards, which have been provided by global gift card firm Stored Value Solutions (SVS), can be bought and redeemed in-store and online at both retailers.

SVS managed card and carrier production, as well as the initial distribution to stores ahead of last month's launch, and it will also oversee the ongoing store replenishment of the cards. Initial sales of the cards have reportedly surpassed expectations.

The programme has been rolled out across more than 360 stores and the websites of both brands, and it comes at a time when the gift and voucher market continues to grow. Figures from the UK Gift Card & Voucher Association released earlier this year indicated that the consumer gift cards and vouchers industry expanded by 10% year on year in the first quarter of 2014 – with stores representing 70% of total consumer sales.

Sean Allam, commercial director at John Lewis, said: "In this, John Lewis's 150th year of delivering quality and value to our customers, we are pleased to be providing our customers with a new programme designed to offer them flexibility and choice.

"Our successful voucher programme is a very important part of our business. We needed to be certain that when we migrated, we would add value to our customers and to our business. The experience and functionality offered by SVS was a perfect fit for us."
