Online payments firm Klarna appoints 'rock-star' retailer to board

European online payments group Klarna has announced that ex-Asos international director, Jon Kamaluddin, has joined its board.

Sweden-based Klarna recently launched its flagship product, Klarna Checkout, in the UK after a soft launch with Fitnessguru, and the company is looking to expand its presence among British retailers.

The checkout service allows consumers to make online purchases using only their email address and postcode, and Klarna says its tools can significantly increase retailer conversation rates.

CEO and co-founder of the technology company, Sebastian Siemiatkowski, described Kamaluddin as "the perfect fit" to aid the business's growth, as it looks to enter new territories. The former Asos man is one of eight members of the board, which also includes Sir Michael Moritz of Sequoia Capital.

"Asos has done for eCommerce what the Beatles did for pop and Jon is a rock star," explained Siemiatkowski.

"Jon brings a wealth of consumer business experience alongside a proven track record in successful geographical expansion."

Kamaluddin was international director at Asos from 2009 to 2013, having spent five years as CFO. In his role as international director, he led the online fashion house's global expansion into the US, Russia, China, Germany and Australia.

Commenting on his new role, Kamaluddin said: "Klarna already works with many of the biggest retailers in Europe.

"I'm excited to be part of its mission to bring a high level of sophistication to the UK eCommerce market and reform our current broken mobile payments systems. Klarna is the solution I wish I'd had when I was at Asos."
