Tesco extends scan-as-you-shop technology

UK grocer Tesco is continuing to introduce new technology in its stores with the addition of more scan-as-you-shop devices across its UK store estate.

Having put the devices in 200 stores during the 2012-13 financial year, Tesco will be rolling out the solution to 100 further UK stores by the end of 2014.

Powered by the My-Scan self-scanning solution from Netherlands-based firm Re-Vision and Motorola's MC17T retail mobile computer, the tool offers customers an opportunity to speed up the shopping process and keep track of their spending while filling up their basket.

It comes as the supermarket group announced recently that it has introduced new automated NCR checkouts in its Lincoln store and implemented contact payment points in all of its London outlets.

Michel Haagmans, managing director at Re-Vision, commented: "The industrial roll-out capabilities of the My-Scan self-scanning solution will enable Tesco to launch self-scanning in a large number of stores within a very short time, and we are looking forward to creating another success story together with the Tesco team."

Sally Marriott, retail development IT Director at Tesco, said she is confident that Tesco's partnership with the vendors offering this in-store technology will continue to be successful.

In other Tesco news this week, the grocer announced that it has ended talks with various parties in respect of potential merger options for its business in Turkey. The retailer said it will be "accelerating our plans to focus the business on its heartlands, minimise capital spend and improve profitability".

It is uncertain what this means for the retailer's 190+ stores in the country, but Tesco suggested "there is more we can do to drive stronger cash generation and returns".
