Global news in brief: NFC for Hong Kong transport system

Digital security firm Gemalto, mobile network operator PCCW-HKT and smartcard payment services provider Octopus Cards have teamed up to bring a variety of NFC services to Hong Kong.

Gemalto's UpTeq multi-tenant NFC SIM1 will enable PCCW-HKT customers to load the Octopus payment functions onto their mobile NFC device, allowing people to pay for all their journeys across Hong Kong's transport system with their phones.

Alex Arena, group managing director of PCCW-HKT, said: "Our cooperation with OCL to provide Octopus mobile payment service integrating NFC technology, which is the first such service in Hong Kong, is another example of HKT's efforts to enrich the lifestyle of our customers, who can now enjoy convenient, effective, and secure mobile payment under Octopus' extensive transport and retail coverage all over Hong Kong."
