Video showcase and interview: Boxpark Croydon

Retail Design World visited the new Boxpark development in Croydon to speak to founder Roger Wade about the inspiration and strategy behind the centre.

The site, next to East Croydon Station, is in an area undergoing massive redevelopment that will introduce high levels of new homes. It also has a large daytime population because there are a large number of offices in the area.

A host of food brands have joined the development, mostly independents that consumers will not have encountered before. That is part of the appeal for both customers and tenants. Coqfighter director Tristan says that being surrounded by likeminded independents means the store will be busy with adventurous diners.

The brand designed its own store, with the objective of making sure it could fit in its own private seating area as well as benefitting from the communal central area.

Boxpark founder Roger Wade says that traditional  market squares, such as the sunken central area at London’s Covent Garden, have been a key influence on the new development. BDP was appointed to develop the scheme, along with retail specialist Brinkworth and graphics group Filthy Media.
