£60m Queensgate extension takes a step forward

Contractors have been appointed to complete the £60 million extension to Queensgate shopping centre, in Peterborough. The project will add 7,154 sq m (77,000 sq ft) of retail and leisure space at the centre.

Lendlease manages the centre for investment manager Invesco Real Estate, and the two companies have jointly appointed McLaren Construction to complete the second phase of works at the centre.

A new central atrium, covered by a glass roof, will be created as part of the Queensgate project. The area will house a restaurant and leisure space which will be flooded with natural light. A bridge link will connect the extension to a new 10 screen Empire cinema. All parts of the build are scheduled for completion by Autumn 2021.

McLaren will work alongside consultant Gardiner & Theobald to build the vertical extension to the centre. Queensgate will remain open to customers throughout the project, though parts of the building will be closed off for periods while work is carried out. The construction group operates in the UK and the United Arab Emirates, in construction, development and property investment. It works on various commercial projects – including retail and office properties, as well as mixed-use developments – and public sector buildings. It has around 700 employees.

“The extension, which includes space set aside for leisure that will complement the 10-screen Empire cinema, marks a major milestone for Queensgate’s development, futureproofing the retail destination for years to come. We are pleased to be working with construction experts McLaren and together will create this long-awaited addition to the scheme, bringing significant benefits to the city of Peterborough,” said Lendlease head of retail Guy Thomas.

“The second phase of this major redevelopment at Queensgate will provide an exciting new cultural entertainment hub for local people and visitors to Peterborough,” added Jay Newman, managing director of McLaren South. “This is a challenging build – we know from our experience in building mixed-use leisure and restaurant developments that we have to be innovative with the project scheduling, using modern construction methods to carry out the demolition and major works - to minimise disruption to Peterborough’s shoppers. Once complete, the new facilities will also create 200 new jobs for local people. We are working closely with the local community and Queensgate to bring further employment opportunities to the area during the construction programme.”

Last year, John Lewis & Partners announced that it would be investing £21 million in its anchor store at Queensgate, to coincide with the extension of the shopping centre, with a number of new store features due to be added as part of the project.

Queensgate's other anchor store is a large Primark unit. Other retailers at the centre include Pandora, New Look, Smiggle, Joules, New Look, Marks & Spencer, Superdry, Ernest Jones, and Yankee Candle.
