Why you should leave the office to come to RBTE 2018

We’re now less than two weeks from the largest ever RBTE and stress levels are at an all-time high. While sleep hours are at an all-time low, as always, excitement outweighs the nerves.

I launched RBTE in 2010. I was told that the first two years would be the hardest and after that it would smooth sailing. Eight years later and I can honestly say it hasn’t got any easier!

There is no denying that 2018 has already proved to be a most challenging time for retailers. Treasured high street names such as Maplin, East, Claire’s Accessories and Toys R Us have fallen in to financial peril. Analysts and experts all have their own reasons for why this happened, but look closely and you’ll see “failure to evolve” appear on most lists, but evolving is not easy!

To win the battle for customers, to adapt to change and to stay relevant in these exponential times is a challenge that, as previously mentioned, has already claimed several big name victims. The ones who want to survive have several important areas to tackle of which RBTE covers all.

Tough times often breed opportunities. Sometimes the most creative, innovative and industrious ideas are discovered when hope has all but gone. RBTE 2018 will see more start-up companies than ever before. These bright minds who could make a massive difference to your business have never been given the opportunity to showcase exactly how they can benefit today’s retailer. I’m proud that RBTE is the show that gives them that platform.

I’ve been fortunate enough to meet with some of the UK’s most influential retailers over the past 12 months. It’s been enlightening to try and understand the pressures and issues in their day-to-day roles. The most frequent questions include: What does the future hold? How can I combat the threat of Amazon? What are my investment priorities? How can I merge the online and offline experience? Should I empower my staff more? Will AI / robotics / voice commerce / AR / biometrics / RFID [insert another emerging technology here] play a role in the store of the future?

Never has RBTE been more important. Never has RBTE been more relevant and never has RBTE had such a diverse range of conferences and suppliers. The guidance, the advice and the knowledge to be gained from a day at RBTE is unrivalled. A retailer friend of mine once described RBTE as “a years’ worth of research in one day.” It’s a powerful testimonial but oh so true.

See you on the 2nd & 3rd of May.

RBTE takes place at London’s Olympia, 2-3 May 2018.
