VM choice: Multiplex pop-up by Tom Dixon and Selfridges

Take a short detour from Oxford Street very soon to catch the Tom Dixon and Selfridges pop up store in the Old Selfridges’ hotel space, which closes on Thursday (15 October 2015).

Designer and retailer Tom Dixon has curated the space as a multi-brand retailer bringing a collection of home, gift, and accessory items to market.

Let’s take a look from a VM-viewpoint, commencing with the Horticultural Spa’s entrance. This offers a relaxing space in which to stop, breathe, and connect, decorated with a curved, wooden grid wall decorated with small herbs and plants.

Boskke’s cool inverted plant display showcases its ‘plant container with a hole.’ This allows the plant to be rooted and then inverted so it can be hung from the ceiling. A neat product based on an old idea: my father was very fond of doing the same thing, growing geraniums in old champagne bottles with a hole knocked through the base. This allows a plant to be grown without using up shelf space.

This architect’s brush is nicely displayed on Clerkenwell-London’s stand. I liked the simple pins at each corner and the thread around them, mimicking the ‘velvet rope’ on a miniature scale.


Keen to promote its seamless integration system for smart objects, robots - remote-controlled cars, home solutions, and lighting projects - Sam Labs offers a handful of jelly-beans from a dispenser every time its merchandise is tweeted-on by a customer.

On a larger scale, Moo offers the opportunity for customers to paint-gun its totally white-walled stand. When completely covered in colour, Moo proposes to reload the paint guns with white paint and ask customers to shoot it white again.
