VM choice: Auerbach & Steele bears go back to school

Optician Auerbach & Steele on London’s King’s Road has a cute back-to-school display at present. Employing teddy bears – always a good attention-getting choice – at a teddy-bears picnic, with all bears wearing glasses, it combines a back-to-school theme with children’s frames.

A row of dinky-sized milk bottles, like the ones as British schoolchildren drank each morning before Margaret Thatcher vetoed school milk, is in the foreground. Each contains a letter printed on a piece of paper spelling back-to-school plus a drinking straw. The bears sit on a faux-grass covered plinth, spread with a vintage hand-embroidered tablecloth with faggoted hem, eating cupcakes and honey, and drinking tea.

The background is filled with oak leaves and branches, now sadly a little withered. But the sense of decay that this brings is rather nice, perhaps underlining the fact that summer is over and that it is time to return to school.

The moss-covered branch supporting a beribboned bear is perhaps more successful than the leaves.

Additional back-to-school signs are formatted as as optician’s eye test, a nice touch.

The existing optician’s graphic, a stylised magnifying glass, sits a little oddly with this very cute theme, and underlines the display’s slightly home-made touch. Altogether, very cute.
