VM inspiration: landscapes

Sometimes we just need an image for VM that is redolent of the season, the tropes of the brand, or in Donna Karan’s words, the ‘moment’ that fashion retailing seeks to convey. The three images here might spark ideas for backdrops.

The bridge adjacent to the extensive grounds of Audley End, an early 17th century country house outside Saffron Waldon in Essex, UK, managed by English Heritage, is a lovely construction in weathered stone.

With that pleasingly arched balustrade, the curves echoed in the two bridge piers and repeated in the four decorative roundels, it is a totally harmonious structure in itself. Harmony is of course, what every window display aims to achieve. With seasonally dressed mannequins placed to the side of a similar image on a light box or a screen, an image of classic architecture such as this would enhance formal menswear, women’s occasion wear, or even high-summer festival wear.

This amazing stream wanders through the grounds. The luxuriant green plants growing below the surface of the water hint at hidden depths, just as fashion merchandise often appeals as being something more than fashion: ‘It’s not just fashion, it’s me.’ Cool and peaceful, this image and the merchandise for which it might form a backdrop is serene. Add a few varied foliage plants in the foreground and the background becomes enough for high summer dresses, an original variation on Henley week, or even a Chelsea Flower Show window.

Lastly, the classic sweeping grounds, with cricketers pleasingly in the distance. Beyond the stream, which effectively replaces a ha-ha designed to keep livestock away from the house grounds, runs a main road. A little time with Photoshop would eliminate the odd car. Imagine mannequins in high summer whites in the foreground on a floor of artificial grass - not too expensive and very simply achievable.
