Recent findings from US analysts RSR Research indicate that retailers are acutely aware that many of the legacy technologies they have been using for years require a refresh, in order to meet the demands of the modern consumer.

From travelling the user conference circuit over the last year, visiting retail conferences during that time and witnessing a plethora of big company financial statements, it seems clear to this publication, too, that retailers – on the whole – understand back-end investment is needed for long-term business gain.

Essential Retail is now asking our readers whether their companies plans to invest in all-important merchandising systems during this financial year. Via our user poll (see right), we are hoping to gauge the importance retailers are attaching to this part of their overall operations.

The poll is being conducted ahead of The Buying & Merchandising Summit, which takes place for the first time this year at London's Cavendish Centre on 22 September.

Speakers confirmed for the event include: Rajesh Kumar, Adidas Group's vice president, merchandising – concept to consumer; Fabio Brunello, director for retail planning & allocation at Levi's; and Paul Brennan, group merchandising & retail director for Net-a-Porter.

George Adams, current advisor to Victoria Plumb, and formerly group CEO of Maxeda DIY and CEO for European development at Kingfisher, will provide the day's keynote speech.
