I like using contactless payment services, but I'm not certain that I'll quickly adapt to mobile-enabled transactions. There are thousands of consumers like me but, equally, there are plenty of shoppers who can't wait for the mobile wallet to arrive.

This one paragraph highlights the problem all retailers are now facing when choosing where to invest their money in the field of payment technology and solutions. As they look to set up their businesses to operate successfully in an omnichannel retail world, there are raft of payment options to consider across eCommerce, mobile and in-store.

And don't forget, payment is intrinsically linked to the vital issue of security – and this is an area where regulations are continually changing, too. The deadline date for single European payments area – SEPA – compliance is fast approaching, of course, and this is causing some businesses a bit of a headache.

It is against this backdrop in October that RBTE held its latest payments steering committee meeting. During the debate, which was attended by representatives from a number of the leading players in the industry, it was clear that there is a need for clarity.

With so many new digital forms of payment on the horizon, including PayPal's Beacon, which has been well received by analysts to date, it is certainly an area worthy of today's special edition of Essential Retail.

You can read comment pieces from some of the sector's leading spokespeople, not to mention the full write-up of what was discussed at the steering committee meeting.

There has been so much innovation in the payments industry in recent years, and Essential Retail and RBTE aim to keep you up to date with all the latest solutions and hot topics.
