Mike Cooper has been named the new CEO of UK parcel carrier Yodel, officially assuming the role on 1 February.

Prior to joining Yodel, Cooper spent nine years at passenger transport provider Arriva, where he was deputy CEO, managing director and oversaw a £1 billion+ turnover business comprising 30,000 employees.

The new recruit's other previous roles include chief commercial officer at budget airline easyJet and managing director of the direct sell business at Thomson Holidays.

Dick Stead, executive chairman of Yodel, commented: "Mike has an impressive track record of galvanising people to deliver exceptional results and using consumer insight to drive a great customer experience.

"He will focus us still further on our ever improving service levels and provide impetus to Yodel's growth ambitions."

The appointment comes after Yodel reported a successful peak period at the end of 2015, which saw the business handle over 22 million parcels in the five weeks running up to Christmas Eve. According to the Delivery Index from e-tail trade association, IMRG, and delivery management technology provider, Metapack, growth in UK online retail parcel volumes last year was up by 15.7% year on year.

A record 1.065 billion parcels were dispatched by the various carriers during the year, of which an estimated 260 million were handled through the November-December peak trading period.
