Sainsbury's has announced it is creating 900 jobs at its new online fulfilment centre in Bromley-by-Bow, East London, which is due to open in the autumn.

The retailer has begun recruitment for the first 470 employees who will work in the new 185,000 sq ft centre, while the other 430 jobs will be filled by 2020. The roles include drivers, order pickers, product replenishers and managers who will specifically fulfil demand in the capital.

"Demand for our online delivery service in the capital continues to grow. We expect this trend to continue as more and more customers enjoy the flexibility of multichannel shopping using our groceries website and app, in addition to visiting stores," said Robbie Feather, director of online at Sainsbury’s. "Our online orders are currently picked from supermarket stores across the UK and this model will continue, but the Bromley-by-Bow Centre will help us keep pace with demand in London, enabling us to fulfil another 25,000 orders per week."

The 900 additional employees will also support Sainsbury's strategy to allow customers to shop "whenever and wherever they want". The retailer said it hopes to roll out a same-day delivery service to 30 stores by Christmas.

Same-day delivery is currently being trialled by three stores in London and the South East: Streatham Common, Richmond and Brookwood in Surrey. Orders made by 12pm will be received within four to six hours, depending on whether customers choose click & collect or home delivery. There will be no additional charge for Sainsbury's 'Delivery Pass' customers, while the same-day service will be "competitively priced" for other customers and free for orders over £100 delivered Monday to Thursday. If the trials are successful, the service will be available in 30 stores by Christmas.

Robbie Feather added:  "As our online sales grow we are seeing an increasing proportion of orders placed for next day delivery, so this trial is a natural next step in delivering our strategy to help customers shop whenever and wherever they want."

Last month, Sainsbury's began trialling a new mobile one-hour fulfilment service at its Wandsworth store in London. Customers using the 'Chop Chop' app can order up to 20 products which will be delivered by bike in a three mile radius within an hour.
