Amazon has reportedly hired Frances Russell, Marks & Spencer's former head of womenswear, as it looks to launch a fashion line.

According to Sky News, Russell will help Amazon target the fashion industry with a new own-label product line. Amazon sells a considerable amount of clothing in the US, but is being held back by not having its own label.

Russell held the role as head of M&S's womenswear business for two years, before leaving last year after the appointment of Steve Rowe to the board as executive director of the retailer's entire clothing business. Rowe has been named as successor to CEO, Marc Bolland, who will leave the company later this year.

Amazon is attempting to disrupt all areas of retail, with its recent launch of Amazon Fresh in the US shaking up the grocery market. Amazon is expected to launch its online grocery proposition in the UK in the coming months after taking over a lease on a warehouse previously used by Tesco.
