Macy's and its sister company Bloomingdale's are trialling an on-demand digital tailoring network that provides an alterations services for customers buying clothing online.

The US department store group has teamed up with vendor, zTailors, to pilot the offering in the Los Angeles area, with additional pilots to begin later this month in metro New York City, San Diego and San Francisco, as well as in Washington state, Oregon and Florida.

But how does the process work? Customers making an online purchase of a garment that may require alterations can click to request tailoring and book an experienced, pre-qualified tailor in their area. Following the transaction and subsequent delivery, the tailor visits the customer's home or office for a fitting and wardrobe consultation.

Alterations are completed within a week or less and then delivered back to the customer, with costs similar to the rates charged in a Macy's or Bloomingdale's store. Any further alterations that are required based on the original specification are free of charge.

R.B Harrison, Macy's chief omnichannel officer, said: "With zTailors, our online customers can receive the same professional and personalised service they have come to expect from our stores.

"For those customers who prefer to purchase online, this is a convenient way to look their best at a fraction of the cost of custom clothing."

All those employees working for zTailors – which is a George Zimmer company – go through a selection process that involves screening and certification. Macy's is the business's first retail partner.

George Zimmer, zTailors founder and chairman, commented: "We are launching a retail industry-leading innovation on a unique platform.

"With a nationwide network of skilled and experienced tailors, zTailors fills an unmet need in the marketplace."

The offering at Macy's and Bloomingdale's will be expanded into additional geographical markets later this summer and it is expected to be available nationwide by early autumn 2015.
