Some of the largest names in convenience retailing are among the companies to have trialled a new digital platform aiming to put relevant promotions and deals in the hands of customers, via their mobile phones.

Spar, Londis, Nisa and Premier joined companies such as HMV, Beales and Intersport in piloting Big Deals Local (BigDL), a new offering from Instant Access Technologies that allows shoppers to receive personalised and localised notifications to their mobile devices, related to the sectors and stores they are interested in.

Officially launched last summer, BigDL customers can also sign up online or download an app and use the service to receive targeted and relevant alerts when in-store, via beacon and Bluetooth technology. The company has this week revealed results of its pilot, saying that there have been 50,000 BigDL application downloads – solely generated from point of sale at participating retailers and through word of mouth.

Since running these initial pilots, the new marketing platform has secured five new partners across the retail and charity sectors, including collaborations with major FMCG brands. Although unable to name the company in question, BigDL said its platform will also be taken into the wholesale channel when white-labelled into one of the UK's biggest buying groups.

Matt Norbury, CEO and founder of BigDL, said: "BigDL offers customers an innovative and exciting shopping experience and provides retailers with the opportunity to stay connected with today's omnichannel shopper via their smartphones, tablets and desktops.

"Our technology champions the consumer, saving them time and money by showing them the latest high street offers and deals in one place, personalised to them. We are delighted with the success of the pilot schemes and are very much looking forward to welcoming our new partners on board."
