Stephen Robertson, who served as British Retail Consortium (BRC) director-general between 2008 and 2012, has joined Essential Retail parent company Legend Exhibitions as board consultant.

Robertson has 20 years of senior experience in the retail industry, having spent seven years as marketing director of DIY retailer B&Q before leading the acquisition of Screwfix Direct, which he then chaired through a period of strong growth. 

He also served on the boards of high street chains WH Smith and Woolworths, before his five years at the BRC. In addition to his role at Legend, Robertson currently serves as chairman for not-for-profit organisation Business West, as well as holding non-executive director and advisory roles at Timpson Group, Hargreaves Lansdown and Clipper Logistics.

The appointment will further bolster Legend's growing reputation in the sector, built on brands including RBTE (Retail Business Technology Expo), Essential Retail, Retail Design Expo and Retail Design World.

Commenting on his new role, Robertson said: "The retail industry is going through such a period of dramatic change that it's a really critical time to join a company that is embracing this state of flux and delivering solutions to retailers, from events to retail insights, that will make a beneficial impact to a retailers business.

"RBTE is already an established and respected event, and the addition of Retail Design Expo and Retail Design World to the Legend portfolio will provide the industry with all the solutions encompassing the online and offline retail offering under one roof."
